Under the Big Top: A Carnival-Themed Queer Prom for LGBTQ+ Youth and Allies

Alameda, CA — A night of color, celebration, and community is coming to Alameda this spring as Alameda Pride and Queer Teen Center (QTAC) present “Under the Big Top: Queer Prom 2026”—a carnival-themed prom created especially for LGBTQ+ youth and their allies in grades 6 through 12.

Taking place on May 8th from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Alameda Veterans Memorial Building, this free event invites young people from across the region to step into a vibrant, affirming space where self-expression is celebrated and everyone is welcome—no matter where they live.

“Under the Big Top” reimagines the traditional prom experience through a playful carnival lens, blending the magic of a classic fair with the joy and inclusivity of a queer-centered celebration. Attendees can expect a lively atmosphere filled with music, dancing, and interactive activities designed to spark connection and fun. From colorful carnival-style games to delicious snacks and exciting raffle prizes, every detail has been thoughtfully crafted to create a memorable night for youth of all identities and backgrounds.

At its core, the Queer Prom is about more than just a party—it’s about creating a space where young people feel seen, safe, and celebrated. For many LGBTQ+ youth, traditional school dances can be challenging environments where self-expression may feel limited or unsupported. This event offers an alternative: a prom where attendees are encouraged to dress how they want, dance how they want, and show up fully as themselves without fear of judgment.

Organizers from Alameda Pride and the Queer Teen Center (QTAC) emphasize the importance of providing inclusive programming for youth, particularly in spaces that center joy and community building. By hosting events like Queer Prom, they aim to foster a sense of belonging and connection among young people while also strengthening networks of support for LGBTQ+ youth and their allies.

The carnival theme brings an added layer of excitement and creativity to the evening. Guests might try their luck at classic-style games, win fun prizes, or simply soak in the festive décor inspired by bright lights, bold colors, and whimsical charm. The dance floor will serve as the heart of the event, where a curated playlist of crowd-favorite songs will keep the energy high throughout the night.

In addition to entertainment, the event will provide complimentary snacks, ensuring that attendees can relax and enjoy the evening without any financial barriers. Raffle prizes will offer even more opportunities for fun, with a variety of items up for grabs throughout the night.

Importantly, this event is completely free to attend, and there is no requirement to live in Alameda. Youth from surrounding communities are encouraged to join, making this a regional celebration of queer joy and youth empowerment. Allies are also warmly welcomed, reinforcing the event’s mission of inclusivity and shared celebration.

Safety and accessibility remain top priorities for organizers. The event will be staffed by supportive adults and volunteers committed to maintaining a respectful, welcoming environment for all attendees. Clear guidelines will be in place to ensure that everyone can enjoy the night comfortably and confidently.

Whether attending with friends, a date, or flying solo, guests can look forward to an evening that blends the excitement of a carnival with the significance of a prom—creating a one-of-a-kind experience that many will remember for years to come.
